Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery are types of plastic surgery that focus on the structures surrounding the eye including the eyelids, orbit, lacrimal system, forehead, and mid-facial region. Because such surgeries can affect ones’ ability to see properly, ophthalmic plastic surgeons are best qualified to perform these delicate procedures.
There are a variety of medical problems involving eyelids and the surrounding areas. Heavy upper eyelids can sag and possibly interfere with vision- a condition called Ptosis. In addition, eyelids can turn towards the eye (entropion) or away from it (ectropion). Other problems can range from benign warts and styes to malignant lesions such as basal cell carcinomas.
